Organized every two years, the International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks brings people together from across the world to share the latest findings and experiences on a wide variety of topics, from geological research to sustainable tourism, education, or participative management for sustainable development. It is the most important meeting for the managers of UNESCO Global Geoparks and members of the Global Geoparks Network to meet and exchange knowledge and experiences on Geopark building and operation.
Kütralkura UNESCO Global Geopark in the Araucanía Region, Chile, and its people are happy to host the 11th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks, in Temuco city, in September 2025. It will be an honor to welcome you, in our outstanding natural and cultural heritage, with the most active volcanoes in the southern Andes, the araucaria forests and the Mapuche-Pewenche people, with their cosmovision about respecting and caring nature.
Chile has been a member of UNESCO since July 7, 1953, so this year will mark 71 years of fruitful cooperation through various activities and programs developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chilean National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO , under the Ministry of Education.
Holding this conference in Chile would allow us to show you our pride for the progress already gained, our plans and future challenges, while working together to reduce gaps and inequalities for the well-being of rural families and indigenous communities in UNESCO Global Geoparks.
The Global Geoparks Network (GGN), is a non-profit International Association officially established in 2014 subject to French legislation. The Global Geoparks Network is the official partner of UNESCO for the operation of the UNESCO Global Geoparks.
Learn moreThe Organizing Committee proposes that this conference will be a Carbon Neutral event.
For this purpose, the carbon footprint that each flight will generate has been calculated and its compensation has been considered by obtaining carbon credits, as well as other strategies associated with planting native trees, use of renewable energy, sustainable mobility, among others, all to help Mother Earth with the mitigation of the effects of greenhouse gases. For each journey of 100 km we must compensate 3 trees if we travel by plane.
The event will also be "Zero Plastic", in order not to generate garbage and contribute to the development of a sustainable conference around our geopark.
The UNESCO Kütralkura Global Geopark was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019, although its work began in 2009 with the project "Geopark Model in Chile, stage 1" financed by GORE Araucanía and supported by the National Service of Geology and Minery.
Currently the Geopark consist of 7 municipalities (Melipeuco, Curacautín, Lonquimay, Vilcún, Cunco, Lautaro and Curarrehue). Soon, the revalidation and extension of the Kutralkura UGGp is expected, going from approximately 8,100 km2 to 12,000 km2, in the year 2023. It is the southernmost territory of all those recognized by UNESCO's International Geosciences and Geoparks Program.
Kütralkura UGGp has been a benchmark for other Chilean territories that are working to be recognized as UGGp. The holding of the 11th UNESCO International Conference on Global Geoparks in Chile in 2025 will contribute significantly to the consolidation of these new territories, which are added to the organization of the event.
